$2.2 million worth of fake Nike shoes from China intercepted at Los Angeles port

Agents with the U.S. Customs and Border Protection in California have seized 14,806 pairs of counterfeit Nike shoes for ‘infringement on a protected trademark,” CBP representatives said in a statement released Wednesday.

The shoes — which would have had an estimated retail price of $2,247,680 if they were genuine — were seized at the Los Angeles-Long Beach port complex. They were “misdeclared as napkins,” according to CBP officials.

The illicit cargo arrived in two different containers. Some of the sneakers, which include Nike’s Air Jordan 1 Off-White, Air Jordan 12, Air Jordan 1, Air Jordan 11, Air Max ’97, can be sold online to collectors and shoe enthusiasts for up to $2,000, according to the CBP.

“Intellectual property theft is a crime that leads to lost revenue for American industry, a loss of American jobs, and often poses a threat to public health and safety,” Carlos C. Martel, CBP’s director of field operations in Los Angeles, said in a statement.

“CBP is the frontline that protects American ingenuity, without any doubt, one of the most valuable assets of our country,” he added.

Customs officers assigned seaport, working with agents Homeland Security Investigations agents busted the counterfeit goods while conducting an enforcement exam on a shipment arriving from China, according to a press release.

LaFonda Sutton-Burke, CBP’s port director of the LA/Long Beach Seaport said that “Counterfeit brand-name shoes is a multi-million dollar criminal industry;” an illicit business that “becomes more profitable in markets involving successful and popular products,” he explained.

The “CBP commits substantial resources to detect, intercept and seize illicit goods at our nation’s largest seaport,” he added.

According to Footwear News, “the global market for counterfeit goods has ballooned into an estimated trillion-dollar industry.”
