A pregnant Florida woman displayed an act of heroism after she repelled violent home invaders on Wednesday night, using an AR-15 to tip the odds in her favor.
The incident took place at around 9 PM in Lithia, Florida, when two armed men wearing masks stormed into the King residence, pistol-whipping the man of the house and taking the family’s 11-year-old daughter hostage.
The husband, Jeremy King, suffered head injuries from blunt force trauma sustained after the suspects kicked him and beat him with a firearm.
Eight months pregnant and having none of it, King’s wife immediately grabbed the family AR and got to work.
“When he came toward the back door in her line of sight, she clipped him,” King recounted. “He made it from my back door to roughly 200 feet out in the front ditch before the AR did its thing.”
While the unnamed housewife had only fired one round, the intruder struck by the round succumbed to his wounds on the scene.
The second gunman is still at large, and investigators are looking to identify and locate him. It is unknown why the King residence was targeted.
According to the Daily Mail, King, who suffered a fractured eye socket (requiring 20 stitches), a fractured sinus cavity and a concussion, praised his wife for stepping up and defending the homestead.
“Them guys came in with two normal pistols and my AR stopped it,” he said. “[My wife] evened the playing field and kept them from killing me.”
Known as “America’s Rifle,” the semi-automatic AR15 has been in civilian circulation since the 1960s, and is arguably the most popular intermediate cartridge rifle in the United States. Making up over one out of every five firearms purchases in the US, there are tens of millions of AR-type rifles in the hands of the American people.
