As NYC prepares to cut 400 EMT jobs, de Blasio’s wife doubles her staff, totaling $2 million in salaries

The trash in New York City is piling up, homicides are through the roof and scores of EMTs are soon to be out of a job- but Mayor Bill de Blasio has time and money to fund his wife’s 14-member staff, which included a $70,000 videographer to film her baking cookies during lockdown.

Chirlane McCray, the bane of many a city employee due to her apparent preferential treatment by her husband, cost the city taxpayers approximately $2 million in various expenses, ranging from a speech writer who makes $117,000 a year to a senior advisor with a $150,000 annual salary.

The advisor was hired on in the spring, right after de Blasio announced that he would freeze new hires for the city to cut a massive deficit.

According to the New York Post, City Hall Spokeswoman Chanel Caraway denounced those who were critical of the “First Lady” of NYC.

“The First Lady manages a robust portfolio and her team works tirelessly to carry out goals and priorities on issues like mental health and domestic violence that will improve the lives of New Yorkers,” she said. “As the City navigates unprecedented challenges triggered by the COVID-19 crisis, these public servants continue to show up everyday to deliver solutions that reach into every neighborhood and family, and we owe them a debt of gratitude.”

The Daily Mail reports that de Blasio was recently slammed by the union head of the city’s EMTs, particularly after it was revealed that 10% of the city’s paramedics would be out of a job soon. The 10% cut equates to about 400 jobs.

“Yesterday, we were praised as heroes, essential workers saving lives,” union head Oren Barzilay said in a statement. Today, the city government treats us like zeros.”

Over 22,000 city jobs will be cut in the fall, though it is unknown what the specific “per-department” numbers will be.
