California mom arrested for killing same son she was convicted of trying to kill years earlier

A mother in California was arrested for killing her preteen son and critically injuring his little brother, approximately 10 years after trying to drown the older son as a baby.

Sherri Renee Telnas left the two boys in an irrigation ditch near her Porterville home on Saturday, and was reported by local residents after she was found acting “strangely.”

The two boys were found not long after by law enforcement, and the 12-year-old was pronounced dead at a local hospital. The 7-year-old remains in critical condition.

According to the New York Post, Telnas had previously been convicted attempted to drown her oldest son in 2009, with the incident taking place in Montana.

Reportedly quite mentally ill when she submerged herself and her baby in a river, she was sentenced to 20 years in the custody of the state Department of Public Health and Human Services on two counts of criminal endangerment.

At the time, the prosecutor said her sentence ensured that the incident would not happen again.

The eldest child was transferred to his father after the 2009 incident, and it is unknown why he was in his mother’s care at the time of his murder.

Telnas faces several chargess, including murder and attempted murder.
