A dutiful passenger disarmed a man attempting to rob a Chicago train, claiming the audacity of the bandit angered him in such a way that he had to take action.
Jean Paul LaPierre was riding the CTA Blue Line on Sunday Morning when he suddenly noticed everyone rushing to get off at the Cumberland stop.
“I said ‘this doesn’t seem like the right way.’ He said ‘No, there’s a guy on the train walking around right now robbing people.’ That kind of made me mad,” LaPierre said.
Heading back onto the train, LaPierre soon found himself being filmed as he confronted the robber, who was armed with a pistol.
Not long after, however, passengers and train officials began urging LaPierre to not “make this any worse.”
“You get me a police officer, right now,” LaPierre responded.
LaPierre, who knows a thing or two about boxing but very little about firearms, quickly took control of the two-toned pistol, throwing the bandit up against the doors and holding him in place as he handed off the firearm to someone who could “put the safety on.”
“I’m a boxer,” he said. “I’ll break your head in one punch.”
Unfortunately for LaPierre, the robber had friends on the train, who attempted to intimidate him into letting the man go.
“They started threatening me but I just stood in his face. The guy kept saying to me, ‘It’s just a gun, let me go, let me go.’ I kept telling him, ‘you’re not going anywhere,’” LaPierre said.
When the suspect, identified as Tremaine Anderson, told Lapierre that none of this mattered, the Boston-area native snapped back.
“It matters to me.”
According to WGNTV, Anderson was later arrested for one felony count of robbery with a firearm. He has a long history of violent crimes, and is currently being held without bond.
LaPierre later went on to run the Chicago Marathon, and has no reservations about returning to the Windy City.
“It’s one of the best cities I’ve ever visited. Incidents happen all over. It is what it is, you know?!” LaPierre said.
