Judge blasted for threatening jail time for elderly cancer patient due to overgrown lawn

A female judge in Michigan is under fire for callous statements made towards an elderly man with cancer who reported being “too weak” to keep his lawn up to city specs.

When 72-year-old Burhan Chowdhury of Hamtramck, Michigan, told District Judge Alexis G. Krot that he did not have the strength to clean up his yard, the judge was in no way sympathetic to his plight.

“You should be ashamed of yourself,” Krot quipped. “If I could give you jail time on this, I would.”

Chowdhury’s son had been helping him with the yardwork, but was reportedly out of the country for some time and was unable to assist.

According to Insider, the judge slapped the man with a $100 fine.

“You’ve got to get that cleaned up,” she said of the property. “That is totally inappropriate.”

“Do you see that photo?” Krot went on. “That is shameful. Shameful. The neighbors should not have to look at that.”

Chowdhury’s son, Shibbir Chowdhury, was incensed by the judge’s behaviour.

“She was telling my father, a sick person, that he should go to jail. That’s ridiculous,” he said. “You can’t give a 72-year-old person jail time for not cleaning an alley.”

The younger Chowdhury has dutifully volunteered to pay the fine on behalf of his father.
