A Nigerian made a significant chunk of money while languishing behind bars- and now he’s in trouble for heading an international scam.
Four years ago, Hope Olusegun Aroke was convicted of fraud and sentenced to 24 years in a Lagos prison.
Despite being locked up, Aroke continued to commit fraud, eventually setting up an empire behind prison walls, and frequently got to leave prison by visiting the hospital for an undisclosed illness.
During his time at the hospital, Aroke would wander over to hotels or social gatherings, often with his family.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the convict, against established standard practice, had access to internet and mobile phone in the correctional center where he is supposed to be serving his jail term,” Nigerian authorities said in a statement. “The circumstance of his admission into the hospital and those who aided his movement from the hospital to hotels and other social engagements is already being investigated.”
According to the New York Post, Aroke utilized his network to establish new lines of income, biu luxury cars and even purchase homes.
