Footage has been released following the vicious attack of an elderly man in Chicago, a grim view into the recent flash of escalated violence in a city that is already known for it.

Released by the Chicago police over the weekend, the footage documents an incident that took place in late July.

The man, who is wearing a uniform of sorts and sweeping the sidewalk, is confronted by a black male wearing an A-shirt and shorts, seemingly without provocation.

According to the Daily Mail, it is unknown if the men knew each other, and it is not believed that any words were exchanged prior to the attack.

Police have not released any information on the condition of the victim following the attack or his identity.  

Chicago has seen a violent spike in crimes, one unprecedented even for the traditionally bloody and gang-ridden city.
