Story of man who killed mountain lion with his bare hands was greatly exaggerated; actually killed small cub

The mountain lion who died at the hands of a Colorado runner was hardly a mountain lion at all, according to authorities.

In a rare twist, the “big cat” that elevated Travis Kauffman into the global news cycle turned out to be around 34 to 40 pounds at the time of the attack, and was only 3 or 4 months old.

The baby mountain lion was partially eaten by other animals -to include its own siblings- when the carcass was recovered.

According to the New York Post, Kauffman is 5 foot 10 and weighs 150 pounds. During the struggle with the scrawny lion, the runner bludgeoned the animal with a rock and stepped on its throat.

While the lion was young, local wildlife officials did not deny that it was dangerous, and said Kauffman did everything right in terms of his self-defense from the wild predator.
