Update: Ilhan Omar, who trivialized 9/11, set to divorce her husband, again

UPDATE: Minnesota Congresswoman Ilhan Omar, who has been the subject of ongoing controversy related to her second marriage, is now divorcing her other husband, again.

Omar and Ahmed Hirsi, her first and third husband have split and are headed for divorce, according to reports from the Daily Mail.

The move comes amid inquiries as to whether or not she married a relative in a sham marriage to skirt immigration laws and get him into the U.S. She first divorced Hirsi to marry Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who many believe to be her brother. She would later divorce Elmi and remarry Hirsi.

Original Story:

Even before being elected to Congress, Ilhan Omar has been the subject of some controversy.

The Minnesota Congresswoman -who was originally born in Somalia- has made headlines in recent memory for her controversial statements concerning 9/11, Al-Qaeda and even displays of blatant anti-Semitism.

But one topic in particular remains murky for all partisan factions involved: Did Ilhan marry her brother to get him US citizenship?

The topic itself, while taboo, admittedly has no conclusive end, even for fact-checkers at Snopes.

Omar admits that her marriages were not official, and were instead faith-based within the Muslim tradition.

“In 2002, when I was 19 years old, Ahmed Hirsi (whose name before he received citizenship was Ahmed Aden), the father of my children and love of my life, and I, applied for a marriage license, but we never finalized the application and thus were never legally married,” she said in a statement. “In 2008, we decided to end our relationship in our faith tradition after reaching an impasse in our life together.”

Omar would later “marry” and “divorce” a British citizen, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, who many believe to be her brother. She would later remarry Hirsi.

Despite Omar’s claims and a hearty defense in her favor by mainstream media outlets, an investigation revealed that she May have done so in an effort to skirt immigration laws.

According to the Star Tribune, a MN state investigation into campaign finance violations revealed that Omar filed federal taxes in 2014 and 2015 with Hirsi, while she was still legally married to Elmi.

Omar had also used her campaign’s time and resources to keep the story of her marriage to Elmi out of the media, lest it impact the election results.

Omar’s relatives have remained silent about her marriage to Elmi.

Snopes.com, a fact-checking website often accused for left-leaning bias, has also determined that it is not yet possible to rule out the accusation. The page concerning the matter has not been updated to reflect the campaign finance violation inquiry findings.

As for the truth behind the matter, it is unknown if all the facts will ever come to light.
