Washington Post writer suspended for retweeting bad joke about women

A reporter from the Washington Post unwittingly became a free speech martyr after he was placed on suspension for retweeting a joke about women.

Dave Weigel was suspended by WaPo for one month without pay after a female colleague publicly complained.

The retweeted joke in question, originally posted by YouTuber Cam Harless, said, “Every girl is bi. You just have to figure out if it’s polar or sexual.”

Weigel’s female colleague, Felicia Sonmez, initially asked him about the retweet in an internal communique.

“I’m sorry but what is this?” she wrote, claiming the retweet was “a confusing message about what the Post’s values are.”

Later, Sonmez shared a screenshot, deciding a very public calling-out was in order.

Fantastic to work at a news outlet where retweets like this are allowed!” Sonmez commented on Friday.

Ever true to their stereotype, WaPo immediately stepped in and overreacted.

“Editors have made clear to the staff that the tweet was reprehensible and demanding language or actions like that will not be tolerated,” the publication told Fox News.

The suspension raised a lot of eyebrows, particularly in the aftermath of another WaPo reporter being caught lying on multiple occasions.

“Taylor Lorenz just got caught repeatedly lying in her article such that WP had to revise it 3 times as an ‘Editor’s Note,’ and it still contains a lie: nothing happened. Dave Weigel immediately apologized for RT’ing a joke and is suspended without pay,” Substack journalist Glenn Greenwald critiqued. “The reason this matters is because the people at these media corporations who constantly reveal themselves to be deranged sociopathic freaks and neurotics — as is happening now at the WPost — are the ones demanding the right to declare Truth and Falsity and censor in its name.”
