A young boy was sent away in tears after an activist Santa Claus refused to grant his wish for a Nerf gun, prompting the not-so-jolly man in the red suit to be dubbed “Santifa.”
A video -which has made its rounds on Twitter- shows a “Santa” behind plexiglass at the Norridge, Il, Harlem Irving Plaza, speaking with a boy named Michael.
Michael had one wish for Santa- a Nerf gun.
“No, no guns,” the Santa insisted. “Not even Nerf guns.”
The Santa offered up other options, pressuring Michael to decided on alternatives rather than what he wanted.
When the little boy requested the Nerf gun again, Santa refused once more, prompting the boy to begin crying.
The video was originally posted to social media by Michael’s mother, Sabella DeCarlo.
“My poor baby,” she wrote on Facebook. “This was the first year Michael was excited to go see Santa. It was supposed to be magical but instead I had to watch my sweet little boy fight back tears because Santa told him No because of his own personal beliefs. I had to think fast and explain to him that this Santa was just a helper and not the real guy. I just wanted to console my baby and get him out of there, flipping out on Santa would have only made it worse. His Elfie is going to bring him a Nerf gun directly from the North Pole, from the real Santa, tonight.”
Others on Twitter were outraged by the activist Santa, and going so far as to arrange a en-masse delivery of nerf guns to Michael’s home.
DeCarlo responded on social media, stating that while Michael’s wish has been fulfilled, she is going to arrange a Nerf gun toy drive for children in need.
“We’re trying to turn this unfortunate incident into something positive and spread cheer to children who really need it,” the statement read. “The HIP is not where you want to take your children to see Santa, if they are asking for Nerf guns.”
